Research based

Through several user research sessions, 101 level upskill information was deemed unanimously valuable for beginner drivers. But other more experienced drivers wanted to see this area in the app be utilized for additional safety, recovery, and modification resources. There was a sense of concern for information being crowd-sourced, so users asked for this information to be vetted up front.​

“I think that's extremely valuable as somebody who runs a club and takes people out for the first time. That first time experience is make or break, right? You either get a lifelong Jeeper after that, or you get somebody who says this isn't really my thing.”​

“It's really kind of funny because there's off-road equipment providers who actually will give you videos, but I would rather go to my Badge of Honor app and see that …”​

Discovery, refinement, and planning

We began with the distillation of feedback received in the user research phase in order to identify common challenges that off-road drivers experience, and ways that we could help. We generated a range of feature concepts and assigned different levels of value that each feature could bring to the app based on those common challenges we learned about.

I worked with the client and the rest of the product team to put together a plan for design and development over the course of several months.

Off-grid downloads

Off-roaders are often out of reach of internet or cellular connection, as they should be! We wanted to give users access to safety and upskill video content in addition to the ability to download the content directly to their device to ensure they’re never left in the lurch. Badge of Honor cares deeply for the off-roading community with the goal to become a regular tool for their adventures.

Keyword tagging system

After receiving all of the Field Manual content from Jeep, I wanted to figure out a way to connect as much content as possible together as one content manual to ensure users never run out of new information and continuously keep learning. A tagging system allowed us to cross-link content throughout the application as well as within single or multiple keyword categories.

Continuous recommendations

The tagging system I created was leveraged on the video detail screen to offer the user related content tagged similarly to the video content currently playing. Badge of Honor is now able to offer an answer to their users’ initial search, as well as continuously educate and spread niche information to users of all levels.

Cultivating curiosity

Various card carousel layouts were used to introduce hierarchy as users scroll through content. Jeep wanted to surface certain Field Manual content over others without having to have multiple pages of video content feeds. Different card layouts as well as carousel scrolling directions keep the experience interesting, constantly unique, and infinite - keeping users continuously engaged and curious.
